Recent research has discovered a direct correlation between reading ability in the 3rd grade and the alarmingly high rate of high school dropouts and incarceration. The problem is especially pronounced among non-white young men. A dynamic group of retired teachers has developed an exciting and innovative curriculum for 24 promising students who have been recommended by local schools.
‘Oceans of Fun‘ is a week-long day camp reading intensive for 3rd and 4th graders who are reading below grade level. The Camp is being held at St Peter’s Episcopal Church, Fernandina Beach, Florida from June 22-26th. The camp will provide breakfast and lunch, t-shirts, books for pleasure reading and other fun activities. The children will also be treated to all sorts of creative activities in the afternoons, from movement classes to jewelry making.
If you would like to offer your time and talent, volunteers are needed in the afternoons between the hours of 12 noon and 3 PM. There is also a need for volunteers in the kitchen to make lunches for the kids. Please contact Paige at paigeanddale@comcast.net for scheduling information.
Contributions for the camp are welcome. The estimated cost is $200/child. To make a monetary contribution in any amount, send checks payable to St. Peter’s Parish (with Reading Camp in memo line). All contributions are tax deductible.
